I went to move a few 2 x 4's off the driveway this evening and found this little beauty. I knew what it was right away, but wanted to get a little closer for a better look.
Yes. I am crazy. My lens was about three inches from her.
I followed her for a few minutes, snapping away with my camera, and moving backwards as she crawled toward me. Finally, I'd had enough, and flipped her over for a look at her hourglass.
And then I grabbed a big shoe. She is very poisonous after all.
Shudder!

ReplyDeletehe's a spider lover. sicko. ugh. comes in handy when we find one in the house and Rocky's not here. otherwise Lizzie and I would just jump up and down and squeal for a bit before trying to end its life using airsoft guns (running away after each shot..i know, pitiful). inverting a glass over the 'pider works pretty well. shaving cream does too. or, grabbing your husband's size 12 clodhopper and whapping the crud outta the bugger! yeah, that's the ticket.
i need more coffee.

I second that shudder! I'll never forget the evening I was closing up at work (I was working in a small sandwich shop) and almost put my hand right on top of a brown recluse spider! It was hanging out at the bottom of the bin where we kept our lids. Not having anything else handy, I killed it with windex and some paper towels, and then washed the bin and the lids!
ReplyDeleteOh Tracy,
ReplyDeleteI thought that must be what you meant but ugh! Spiders give me the creeps...
Thanks for killing it though! :)
AAAAAAHHHHH!!!! I hate spiders, but I am especially happy that we don't have any poisonous ones around here. I'd never sleep.
ReplyDeleteI would have gotten the shoe first and then snapped the pictures! ;)
ReplyDeleteBeautiful and deadly indeed. You are a brave woman for those photos! I have only seen a black widow once in my life and I hope not to see more. Especially now with my 4 month old around.
ReplyDelete*shiver*...Thanks for posting this...I was able to let my kids have a look, its always good to be on the lookout! Im sure something is crawling on me as I type..ACK! Ive been enjoying your blog weekly, even though I havent participated in Foto Friday often. I especially enjoy your recipe blog and have made your ham bbq a couple of times and it tastes just like home :-) Thanks!
ReplyDeletelol ~ I'm glad you grabbed the shoe eventually. It's funny we had black widows all over (outside) when we lived in middle TN, but I haven't seen one since we moved. When we had them, I was mostly afraid that one of the younger children would pick one up in their quest to examine all things wiggly and wormy!
ReplyDeleteI love Jane's shaving cream insecticide idea; quite inventive!
My SIL was cleaning out my moms garage of 40 years worth of accumulated debris and she killed at least 3 of them. When we had a wood pile I was always careful to wear gloves outside. I really really dislike spiders.
ReplyDeleteYou are a brave woman to get so close. Glad the shoe was handy.
Ick! You are brave indeed! She was lovely though, but I am still glad you squished her!
ReplyDeleteBlessings,
Tina :)
Ick! I don't get along well with spiders.
ReplyDeleteut oh
ReplyDeleteWELL I WOULD HAVE TO AGREE THAT I WOULD USE THE SHOE TOO !! BY THE WAY HAVE YOU SEEN THE E MAIL BEING PASSED AROUND ABOUT THE BROWN RECLUSE SPIDER AND THE DAMAGE THAT THEY DO ...... WOW !! I REALLY CAN'T BELIEVE THAT A CREATURE AS TINY AS THESE COULD CAUSE AN ARM OR LEG TO BE NON-FUNCTIONING
ReplyDeletethat's remarkable! ...... and I hope the shoe was a big ol' boot :o)
ReplyDeletethanks for letting me continue to follow you! you're family has been in my prayers
