Show and Tell Friday

Kelli came up with the idea to have Show and Tell on Fridays for anyone who wants to join in. All week long I pondered what to share with you. I came up with a gold locket that was given to me by my dad's mother after her mother's death. This wasn't just any locket, for I never had to add a photo to it. This special locket was given to my great-grandmother by my parents as she and my great-grandfather celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. I have worn it a few times, but mostly just stash it away in a special drawer, and take it out to look at every so often.

My mom was unaware that the locket had been given to me until I told her. She was glad that I had received it, and said that she still remembered the day that she bought it. She had searched for the perfect gift, and finally found this locket, but it was very expensive, and called my dad to make sure that it was okay to buy it. He gave his consent, and she took it home. I know that his grandmother was pleased with such a beautiful gift.

I love the photos that my great grandmother placed inside.
My great grandparents: William and Cefrona McIntyre. They were the parents of my dad's mother.

I'm not sure of the year that they celebrated this special anniversary, but it was in the early 1970's because I was very young at the party. This photo was taken on that special day. I am sitting on a chair in the right of the picture. Click to enlarge. (Autumn is amazed at how the photo looks like her at a young age!) My brother, Brian, is sitting on my great grandfather's lap.
I do not know the year that my great grandfather passed away, but Great grandma died in 1993. She lived to see my first two children, and was thrilled to be a great-great grandma, twice! I'm thrilled to have the locket that she cherished so. It is a reminder to me that I come from a long line of lasting marriages. Praise be to God! Thanks for visiting! Want to play along?

Tracy that locket is lovely, and so special. What a heritage your family has. I just want to know how your great-grandma had such lovely dark hair when she had been married for 50 years? I've been married 26 years and mine is grayer rather quickly. Perhaps she had a secret???

Thanks for sharing. I am going to jump right into the show and tell as soon as I find something worth showing and telling about. Just kidding, hopefully next week. Have a great weekend.

Becky,
My great grandma, and now her daughter, my grandma, retained their very dark hair for a very long time. My dad's mom is 81, and does have some gray, but really is still VERY dark haired yet. I'm only 36, and I'm very gray already! They were (are) Scotch-Irish. Does that mean anything? I don't know...

What a treasure. Being in the living history field, genealogy, and just loving "old stuff," I love to go in antique shops. I am often saddened at what I find that people have gottten rid of; treasures like this and photos. It breaks my heart, for somewhere down the line there may have been someone who would have appreciated it and they'll never know or hear about it and sadly shake their head.

It's a beautiful piece of your family history.

Beautiful locket and a lovely story, Tracy.

My family lost most of its possessions during World War II, and the few that remained were shared between all the children. We have a measuring cup my great-grandma used. I still use it, though I'm very careful with it. It looks simple, but it's special to us. I might share it one of these days.

Oh, Autumn was wanting to write Jason...if it is ok with you, I will email you from my mom's email (since she has yours) and send you the address. Just let me know!

Christie Belle,

Yes, please do send Jason's address. Autumn is a wonderful letter writer, and can make anyone feel like they have known her forever. He may get lots of letters from our house! The other children will probably write, too.
