Day 5, Vacation on the Outer Banks

Today we lounged around all morning. We enjoyed lunch here at the house, and then packed in a full day.

First, we went to Jockey's Ridge State Park. Jockey's Ridge is the tallest natural sand dune system in the Eastern United States. Located in Nags Head, it is one of the most significant landmarks on the Outer Banks, North Carolina. This was an amazing site to see. It felt as if we were in the dessert. We climbed and climbed to reach the top of the dune. The dune is constantly changing, but it is always 80-100 feet above sea level. Since this is a highway away from the ocean, this is unbelievable! We flew kites and watched as hang-gliders practiced. This was quite a workout! Walking in the sand is not easy.

Next, ,we went to Roanoke Island. I think this was my favorite trip of the week. The island was so beautiful, and lush. The small towns were very quaint and old-fashioned. It didn't seem "touristy" to me. We went to Fort Raleigh. Over four hundred years ago, a colony of 112 English men, women and children settled on Roanoke Island, attempting to establish the first permanent English colony in the New World. Their governor returned to England for supplies. He was delayed in his return. When he returned three years later, the entire colony was gone. The houses had been dismantled, and all of the colonists were gone! Not even a skeleton was found.

Then we went to the waterfront in Manteo. We walked around and toured the small lighthouse. We stopped at a small playground and allowed Abigail to play for awhile, and then we headed back home.

Verne made my linguine with salmon sauce for supper. We then enjoyed a swim in the pool, and a soak in the hot tub.

One more day to enjoy...

It sounds as if we share a love of history. When we go vacationing I always like to see the historical sites and do a little research on what is there. Boston, for me, was a treasure indeed.

I'll be sorry to see "our" little vacation end. I have so enjoyed your posts everyday. And no rain!

Every time I stand on top of Jockey's Ridge and look out at the sound, I imagine God scooping out the sand to make the sound and making a huge pile of sand in doing so. I can almost see His hands full of sand and it piling up to make Jockey's Ridge.

Manteo is beautiful; I love that island too. So glad you got to go to Ft. Raleigh. The Lost Colony is one of my favorite parts of history. Wish you cold be here for the play; it is excellent.

So glad you had a good day!

Dunes really are hard work, but at the same time, they are amazing and so much fun!!! You describe everything so well - it is enjoyable to come everyday to read about your adventures for the day and to enjoy it through your excitement, description, etc. THANKS!!!

Your trip is sounding devine. Thanks for sharing it with us.

I saw your comment on Leigh Ann about meeting people and giving out phone numbers. I am a very trusting person, have been for all my 69 years. I think if you have fear and distrust you deprive yourself of many blessings. If we are truly walking with Christ as Lord, as well as Savior, He leads us and guides us and directs our paths. His Word tells us that.

I thought it was so great that you guys met Beach Girl!!! I'm sure it is a blessing that you will always remember.

Jockey's ridge - yes, I had forgotten the name. I'm glad you were able to get there and enjoy it. I just loved looking out the back, away from the ocean - AMAZING!

I just wanted to pop in and say "hi" Tracy. I know I haven't commented, but I've been reading along each day. What?? You didn't know I went on vacation with you!! Ah, but I did and I've had a wonderful time. [Okay, except for maybe the fact that *sigh* Verne's cooking isn't showing up on my dinner table ~ lol!] ;o)

Y'all be safe in your travels back and ENJOY that last day! :o)
