Life Isn't Always Peaches and Cream

I'm tired. And I have a headache. Verne was out of town last night, and I don't sleep well with him gone. Not to mention the fact that I was up until 2 AM. Ironing. Yes, ironing. No, I didn't let it pile up for months. As a matter of fact, I've been all caught up on my ironing three times in the past week. And then I do laundry, and there's more to iron. That's what I call job security! But enough about ironing...

I was cutting out a pattern to make myself a peasant blouse. I left it all on the dining room table while we ate lunch in the kitchen. There was lots of extra fabric.

Mac asked, "Are you making a blouse for yourself?"

"Yes."

"Wow. That's alot of fabric."

Grandma says, "Well, there's alot of her to cover!"

The children looked at me with disbelief, mouths hanging open.

So, I ask you, how would you have responded? I just sat there. Feelings hurt. That happens alot. Here's a picture of the pieces that I need to make my blouse:

Huge, aren't they? The extra fabric is folded on the left. I don't feel like sewing now. I think that I'll go take a nap.

Hi Tracy,
I'm sorry for your bad day-yes, we all have them, but that doesn't make it any easier.
As for the "less than kind" comment, I used to get them all the time and be really upset. My FIL is especially prejudiced against anyone overweight and doesn't have any qualms about letting you know it. I won't say that it never hurts now, but usually I beat them to the punch. If my son had said "Wow, that's a lot of material for a blouse.", I would have replied myself with "Yes, there's just so much of me to cover, but that also means there's so much more of me to love."
Of course I realize that you may not have had time to react before Grandma did-I used to be at a loss for a quick comeback, but over the years it's gotten easier.
At any rate, it's never easy to have others comment on our weight-it's one of those things that's so hard to change and it's not like we can't see ourselves in the mirror or don't realize what size clothing we're wearing!
Try to not let it get you down-I hope Verne will be home tonight so you can sleep. :-)
Have a good evening with your family.
Blessings,
Michelle

Oh Tracy that was such an unkind remark. There are a couple of things that help me at time like that: 1) consider the source & 2) a week (day, year, 100 years you fill in the period of time) from now it won't make any difference. We really are the ones responsible for how we react to events. It truly isn't the event so much as our reaction.

You know what I have to say to that???

Tracy~you are BEAUTIFUL. period.

It is nice to have people say kind things and lovely things to you, and so we should soak them up when they come. Let kind words build you up. Hide them within. Tell yourself those things.

Do NOT do that, however, do those things with awful remarks like 'Grandma' made. Do NOT take her words into consideration. You are beautiful. I don't even know what SIZE you are...but in your profile I see a charming face with a SWEET smile and smiley eyes. And from reading your blog, I see a gentle and kind spirit.

PLease don't let those hateful words lessen the joy and excitement you had in making yourself a blouse, one similar to your daughters'. It is a FABULOUS thing-I LOVE the color-and I WANT to see you in it when it is done. Or, atleast, the finished product.

and trust me-those pieces look big because that is what sewing is ALL about. I know that because I just finished trying to make myself a skirt that was three sizes too big in number and STILL didn't fit me. Patterns are MADE big for seam allowance and stuff.

Your grandma doesn't know ANYTHING.

One thing you CAN be happy about, is that you have raised children to recognize mean and hurtful words. They reacted in shock, knowing that she was out of line. So , GOOD for you!

And if ever you feel bold enough, tell Grandma how you felt and how you don't want your kids to say thigs like that-so she sould think before she speaks.

I look forward to seeing your shirt. And remember-you are lovely. Inside and OUT.

Maybe she meant "compared to the little children". Let's hope.

My grandma made an offhand rude remark about my hair once. Isn't it amazing how those things hurt? That was at least 10 years ago, and I still remember it.

Don't let it stop you from sewing! The color is beautiful and I bet it will turn out to be lovely.

Tracy,

I am sending some hugs your way!

Sometimes it is just best to ignore people. Comments are made and I think that sort of thing reflects more on the comment-maker than the comment-reciever. You are a lovely woman, with a beautiful family and I hope you don't let this get you down.

Please keep going on your project so that you can show it off to your friends here in blogland!

Surely, she meant nothing by it (although she could have expressed herself better), and I am sorry it hurt your feelings. It doesn't help that you already were not feeling well. Besides as a fellow seamstress, you know how even small patterns seem quite large when they are laid out on the table pinned to the fabric (and you had excess fabric). Also, you are making a peasant blouse which requires extra fabric for all of the gathering around the neck and bust. So with that said, I guess I would have said nothing, knowing that they just don't understand how it looks laid out in contrast to the size it will be when it is a finished product. I hope you were able to get a nap and are feeling better!!!

Dear Tracy,
I'm sorry to hear about your sad day. What a hurtful comment. Sometimes having a good cry helps me and then I think about the source, like Susan mentioned. Looking at the picture, it doesn't look like a lot of fabric to me at all...good grief!! A pattern for me would cover the entire table. ;0)
Sending you lots of (((HUGS))).

Ugggg. So sorry about that remark. Susan is right...consider the source, and don't let an unkind remark steal your joy. I agree with all of the remarks!! YOU are beautiful and a blessing. You are God's princess.

Hi Tracy, Nice to 'meet' you. I just found you today through shortstop and her peanut butter names :)

I am sorry to see such a rude comment was made to you. Your picture is posted on your site and you are beautiful! Clearly, after reading some of your posts, your beauty is on the INSIDE as well as the OUTSIDE!

So you go sew that fabric and make one beautiful looking blouse with every little piece of it!

Hi Tracy, New here although I've stopped by to read your blog a few times and enjoyed it. By your picture you're an attractive lady and one who is seeking God has a price far above rubies! Besides I know EXACTLY how you feel. This past Sunday I greeted a lady after service who replied and added "you need to loose weight" (I know that and I'm working on it) I said "I've lost 30 lbs." She said "and you've gained it back"
To which I said "I have not" and left. All possible good intentions aside, it was horribly rude and hurtful. The hardest part is getting it out of my head. But I intend to keep plugging away at my goal but it won't be because of her "encouragement". Words can hurt but God can heal. Hugs, Mar

I am sorry for your hurt feelings--but it's going to be a beautiful blouse and you will look awesome in it!
The enemy will try anything to steal all the joy out of the things that truly give us pleasure. Whether it's a comment--made without thinking--or a look passing from one person to another...just anything he can get his hands on to hurt the children God loves so much.
Take a nap. You deserve it....especially after all that ironing!
When you get up, feel the Lord's arms wrap you up 'cause you are His child darlin'---and He loves you to distraction!
Have a better day tomorrow!
Love, Angie

I'm so sorry this remark was made - but I wonder if she wasn't thinking about the projects she sees with the kids material. Also, Penless taught me a while ago to 'consider the source' as she commented above.

You are a beautiful woman Tracy - God made you how He wanted to!

I'm sorry. It must have been unpleasant to hear. I'm sure you will look great in your new blouse, and it's so neat you can make clothes for yourself!

Thank you all for your uplifting comments.

I can't wait to see your finished blouse!
As for Grandma's comment to you, well, I'll be happy to say I think you are a beautiful person!
Also, I've noticed that older people seem to speak their minds. My mother just turned 77 and if I go to her house to do something for her (cook, clean, etc) she ends up telling how to do it! I just grin and keep doing it my way unless she insists.

Sorry to hear about the comment.

I agree with the others you are beautiful inside and outside.
