Playing Nurse

When he was eight years old he had his tonsils and adenoids removed. I asked if I would be allowed to join him in the recovery room, and they emphatically told me, "No! We'll bring him back to his room when he's ready." I settled into a chair and prayed as they wheeled him away. Not fifteen minutes later the nurse came running down the hall. "You have to come quick! He woke up after the surgery and he won't stop screaming for you! We're afraid his throat is going to be really sore."

This morning, Mac and I entered the surgery center once again. This time, it was for the removal of his wisdom teeth. He was rather jovial, and was cracking jokes. Even his nurse couldn't stop laughing. And then they gave him an IV. The jokes stopped. Mac hates needles. His doctor came in right before the surgery, and prayed with us. Then they wheeled him out of the room. Forty-five minutes later, a nurse took me back to the recovery room where Mac was still sleeping, albeit fitfully.

As Mac opened his eyes, he became afraid. I placed my hand on his shoulder, telling him, "I'm here, Mac. It's okay."

"I love you, Mom."

It doesn't matter that he's seventeen. He was still glad I was there. And then he started cracking jokes again. Stupid jokes. And the recovery nurse was laughing. She told him he better never go drinking because his friends would really make fun of him. We came home, and as Mac was going over the things that he had said, he seemed a little embarrassed. . He's resting, and feeling pretty well considering what he went through. Praise the Lord!

You're a good mom to your boy at any age, obviously.

I'm glad he's survived his trips into surgery so well.

I remember Miss Mischief at 5yo having grommets put in. I was allowed into theater until she went to sleep and we were allowed into recovery until she woke up and seemed fine enough to go home. I am so incredibly grateful for her that as far as she was concerned I was right there with her for every step.

I hope Mac recovers really well.

I think it's wonderful that humor is what comes out when his "defenses" are down. :) Also glad medicine has changed and they understand more about how important it is to have our loved ones with us!!!

First of all, gorgeous picture.
Tracy, what you wrote brought tears to my eyes. How is it that we have been such a incredible gift of being a mom? How is it that God has created such an incredible bond and that our kids love us even though we are not perfect? Truly, being a mom and having such wonderful kids is something that I take for granted sometimes, but your story clearly reminded me to be grateful for this wonderful gift.
Mac, I hope you continue to recover well and that the pain is minimal! Don't forget to take your meds:)

Mac is well loved by you. What a blessing and an example to other moms, that you can still be tender and nurturing even if the patient is a young man. :o)

You're an awesome mom.

When Lizzie had her wisdom teeth out last year she was very funny afterward. And drooling. A lot. She also saw double. Couldn't feel anything for a while. Slept. Very little pain meds...she has a high tolerance to pain. Was doing very well 24 hours later, 'cept for needing soft foods for a few days.

Such a sweet post, Tracy. I will pray that Mac has a quick recovery. I understand about the needles, I'm the same way.

P.s. Thank you for the *excellent* puppy tips!

This seems to be a common thing lately. Christie just had hers out, too. I pray he will do well recovering. Very sweet post.

I'm so glad that he came through his surgery ok and that he was the life of the party!

It doesn't matter how old or young our children are, they are always our children and we always worry about them and have their very best in mind. My oldest is 47 and I still want to help her if I think she needs me and worry about her and her family if they are having any struggles.

You are a wonderful Mom!

We just went through this over here earlier in the year. It's not so fun, but good for a mom to know she is loved and needed.

Hope and pray the next few days go well for all of you.
