Sweet Sixteen

Autumn turned sixteen today. Verne and I had planned to get her a hope chest for this birthday for over a year. After Jon began courting her, it seemed even more appropriate. We searched high and low for a chest that would be suitable, and finally had one custom made by a local Mennonite man. It's solid oak with a cedar bottom. And it locks. Autumn has the only key.

She received her gift earlier in the week, because she has orchestra practice tonight.
I also crocheted a throw that measures about 57" x 60". I didn't want her hope chest to be empty!

Seems I didn't need to worry about that. Grandma gave her a gorgeous set of towels. She's also been able to place various kitchen towels, dishcloths, and the like that we've bought her here and there inside the chest. Sheets. Yes, she still needs sheets.

Her closet is also filling up quickly with other kitchen wares, and odds and ends that will make her house a home. It's such a fun birthday!

how lovely. I think the idea of giving a hope chest is being lost. I was given mine and since my father was out of the picture my (as was then only 11 yr old) brother wanted to give me the first piece "being the man of the family" so he gave me a teapot with a cup and lid that fit on top.

So nice to see another family comtinuing the lovely tradition !

What a lovely gift! Happy Birthday Autumn! Goodness, she's young to be getting married...I didn't realise she was only 15 when she got engaged! Our girls wait a lot longer over here, usually between the age of 19-25.
