Playing Games
Last year I asked for your advice on games to place under the Christmas tree and you didn't disappoint! I never got around to writing about the games that we chose, and how we felt about them. Some of you might be starting to think about what to place under your tree this year. I hope this helps!
Blokus- This game was suggested by many of you, and it was a favorite right out of the box. We ate, slept, and drank Blokus for quite some time after Christmas. I'm not kidding when I tell you that I found myself thinking of ways to place the odd little pieces just right. Definitely a winner in our home. Abigail doesn't love it as much as the rest of us. Guys seemed to love it just as much as girls. Are we still playing it? Absolutely!
Dutch Blitz- The instructions included in the game seemed a little difficult for me to understand, and so we put off playing it. And put it off, and put it off. Finally, Mac played at a friend's house, and reported back just how much fun it is. And so, we all learned to play. And you know, it really is. It's very quick, and you really have to pay attention. We can't seem to get enough of it.
Settlers of Catan- You don't want to play this game if you've only got an hour, as it takes time to set everything up, and even more time to play. It seems slow going at first, but then gets very exciting. This takes alot of strategy. We learned how to play by ourselves, and I think it would have been wonderful to have experienced players teach us a little about it at first.
Cranium Whoonu- This quick little game is a great ice-breaker. It's perfect for small parties, or families. All ages can play as long as they can read. Easy to learn, and loads of fun.
Mille Bournes- This strategic game is fast-paced and based on a cross country road trip in France. The children seem to enjoy it more than I do.
In a Pickle- Creates controversy! We've had quite a few arguments over whether to let something slide or not, and then sometimes, if someone is doing well, family members gang up and turn down even logical answers. Fun, but not something we play all the time.
Scattergories- A real winner! This game is fun, fast, and stands the test of time.

The first 3 are all games I really enjoy. It is so fun to play Dutch Blitz in big groups. We've played in our youth group on teams - one turning the cards and the partner placing them.
Played Settlers of Catan for the first time when I was at the beach in June with the girls. I could not fall asleep at night after playing - was still reworking the game in my head!!
And we love Blokus. We have the 2 person smaller travel game for Q and I. When the other two get bigger, we'll get the bigger version!
I love many of the Cranium games - will have to look into Whoonu! Thanks!
We just played Dutch Blitz last night! Such a fun game.
We love Dutch Blitz (maybe beind Dutch helps - LOL), Scattergories is also a fave as well as Settlers - I guess I should go and get Blokus though, sounds like a winner!
Whoonu is a fairly recent addition here-only a couple years ago-but we all enjoy playing it.
Dutch Blitz, on the other hand, is one we've played for decades, though not much recently. We like playing with a large group and a second deck of cards. We colored in the pictures on the backs of one set to differentiate between the two sets. Eight people playing makes it even more exciting and a second set would allow your whole family to play at once.
Thanks for the other suggestions. I like your reviews of each one-it helps with the decision process when you know a little more than what the box says.
Oh excellent! We are a big game playing family and I am always looking for new games for us to try.
May I recommend Apples to Apples if you do not already have it? You may want to remove some of the cards after reviewing them (I think there might be one or two that refer to sexy or something similar) but we really like it.
Some are games we played as children, specifically Mille Bournes and I have forgotten about! Thanks for the reviews!
We played games last night and the night before and I thought of a game I should recommend to you. Phase 10! We have enjoyed playing it.
