Making Bread

I've only bought one loaf of bread since September. I've been making sandwich bread when I know that we'll need it, and artisan bread for meals. It's such a wonderful treat to have a small loaf of fresh bread when we sit down to the table.

No plastic rising containers for me, though! The authors of Artisan Bread in Five Minutes a Day recommend a plastic container with a non-airtight lid. I thought glass was the better way to go, and found this HUGE canister that works perfectly for doubling the recipe. This feeds us for a week!

Hmm, I've needed an excuse to buy a canister like this, you may have just provided me with one....

Curious as to your sandwich bread recipe, is it posted here or on your recipe blog by chance? I have an oatmeal one that works fine, but gets a bit to dense with anything more than a cup of whole wheat flour, and even that pushes it.

I have a large ceramic bowl that I use for my dough to rise.

I started making my own bread years ago because of Emily's allergies and haven't bought store bought bread, bagels, pita, and tortillas in years. It's so much better for you and a lot cheaper!

Like Bonnie, I'd love to find an excuse to get one of those canisters. Great idea on your part. I like the thought of glass over plastic, too. Sadly, I wasn't crazy about the recipe I tried from the book. Maybe I'll have to give it another go.

Karen, which recipe did you use? So far, I've only done the boule, and we love it. Do you have a baking stone, or are you baking it on a cookie sheet?

I have loved seeing all the photos of your beautiful breads...love the container, too. I prefer glass to plastic.

I want to experiment with trying bagels and english muffins...

We love Karen's recipe for Sweet French Bread, ask her for it, you'll love it!

Such a fabulous idea! I got that book for Christmas but haven't made any yet because we don't have room for a large plastic container in the fridge. Now, I think I could make room for a pretty canister like that.

What is wrong with me????

Can't wait to go and get a container!

I found the website for the Artisan bread in 5 minutes a day. I wasn't super impressed, but neither was I disappointed. Perhaps my expectations were higher than they should've been. Whichever way, that cannister is beautiful!

I must get on to choosing a new bread machine. Mine needed to have the pan replaced, but I can't get that part any longer :(
