Autumn's Apron

Here is the finished product.
I worked on it until about 11:00 last night,
and woke up around 5:30 this morning
to put on the finishing touches: the bows.
I was anxious for Autumn to try it
on as soon as she got out of bed.

What started as a pattern,

turned into a treasure.

I used Simplicity Pattern #4282, and it turned out really well. There are a few changes that I would make if I were to sew this pattern again. I would add interfacing to the waistband and back straps to give them more stability. The straps have buttonholes, and the waistband dons two buttons. I fear that over time the fabric may rip. Probably not, but after spending so much time sewing, you don't want it to all be for naught. I may end up adding more buttonholes on the strap. Right now we have the straps safety pinned where they cross one another to keep the front from slipping off of her shoulders. Autumn says she is thrilled, and I received a big hug as payment for my labors. I expected her to bake something in it today, but that didn't happen. She says she didn't have time. Maybe she is afraid of getting it dirty?

Don't forget to click on the pictures to see the detail of the fabric!

By the way, if you check out my old post, Curtains, I've posted pictures of the ones that I made for the dining room there.

Tracy what a pretty apron. I have that pattern, but have not made it yet. I am glad to know what you would change. Thanks! That is some of the cutest material. I haven't seen that around here.
I was tickled to see you sew on a "Kenmore", too. Mine has been pretty dependable - it's only been in the shop once in 20 years.
Autumn looks very pretty in her new apron!
Blessings,
Karen

Karen, My dad bought me my Kenmore sewing machine when I was in seventh grade after I made ONE shirt in Home Economics! His mother was always at the sewing machine as he was growing up, and when he learned that I liked the shirt project he went off to the store... My dad is NOT a sentimental man, so this machine is a treasured memory for me. My machine is 24 years old, and has only been in the shop once as well!

It makes her look a little chunky, but that is ok. You don't have to worry too much about being fat when your that young because you usually outgrow it.When she grows a little taller the apron will look great on her!
Great color choice for the apron,BTW.

Dear Friendly Advice,
Thank you for your comments. Most women who wear aprons are not wearing them to look thinner, more attractive, etc. It is a practical covering to protect your good clothing while working in the kitchen, around the house, in the garden and so on. The apron is a little big on my daughter, as I wrote in the post. That's okay. It will be able to be worn for many years to come! She feels very comfortable in her new apron, so I'm thrilled.
