Getting Ready to Garden

Each year for the past three years we have had a good sized garden; about 75 x 100 feet. We've been very successful with most things. Others seemed like too much trouble for all that we received for our efforts.

We do very well with zucchini (who doesn't?), yellow squash, spaghetti squash, watermelon, green beans, and potatoes. We also get a good crop of radishes, beets, green peppers, onions, and cabbage.

We did not do so well with corn, or peas. After trying these for one season, we decided not to grow them again. They take up too much space for all the more they produce. Last year, we didn't get one tomato. We discovered that the deer were eating the blossoms off of the plants as soon as they came on. What a disappointment! We will plant them again this year, we'll just make sure that they are toward the front of the garden where our trusty little dog, Rolf, can scare off any deer that trespass.

So far, I haven't done any canning. I do have a big freezer, and I freeze lots. In the summertime, we eat most of our meals from the garden. It's economical, and so delicious!

Today, Verne borrowed a rototiller from our friends, Steve and Donna. He's anxious to work the soil, and get the "early crops" planted. I'm ready, too.

Seeds from my secret sister!

And God said, "Behold, I have given you every plant that is on the face of the earth, and every tree with seed in its fruit. You shall have them for food." Genesis 1:29

i'll be so ready to get settled somewhere and have a garden....i've only had small flower gardens and little tomato patches thus far. my parents always had a huge garden that i would help in, but i've never started one from scratch....so we'll see!

i really want to learn how to can, also. again, something my mom did, but a skill that didn't get passed down. now that i want to learn all these things, we live too far away for her to help me......

and, yes, bummer about the Cats!!!

Hi Tracy! It sounds like your gardening plans are coming along nicely! I love all your seed packets! I have some sunflowers to plant too, along with some daisies, morning glories and hollyhocks. It's supposed to rain here for a week though so I'll have to wait. In my veggie garden I planted a red and yellow pepper plant, 2 basil plants, and 6 strawberries. I never have good luck with tomatoes so I skipped them this year. I have a 4x8 raised box so not much room. The strawberries are mostly for fun. Grace said she said a partly red one on her plant this morning!

Thank you SO much for the shower advice! I think tomorrow will be the day for the lesson. We do have a removeable shower head so that will help with the water in the eyes problem! LOL Wish me luck!!

Thank you, Tracy, for the birthday wishes! I am happy we have "met" here in blogland!
I enjoyed this post on gardening. I want to plant a garden this year, as last year was not a great year for me health wise. I feel stronger this year, and would like to tackle it again.
I freeze and can as much as I have available to do. If we had a large garden, I would do a lot more. I love the look of all those jars lined up on a shelf. LOL!
We've never had much luck with the melons or corn. Now squash grows abundantly here! Tomatoes are something we grow every year, and we have to put them close to the house to keep neighborhood dogs from running them over.
Post pictures of your garden, sometime!
Blessings,
Karen

Hi Tracy. Our lot is large for suburban standards but woefully small for country standards. But we do manage to have an itty bitty vegetable garden and are adding a few barrels in addition to our raised beds. Summer vegies straight from the garden...nothing like it! Bless you. Sherry
