Depression Cooking

I've recently discovered the Depression Cooking Channel on You Tube, and have really enjoyed watching Clara make inexpensive meals while telling stories from her early life. I love that she seems to enjoy these meals while remembering that they got her family through a tough time.

The story she tells of the bootleggers in the Pasta with Peas video reminds me of a tale that my own grandmother tells. As I've heard it told, my great grandfather made moonshine during prohibition. Grandma says that they were raided, and the only barrel that wasn't taken was the one she was sitting on. Mac giggles each time she talks about it.

I've recently come across Clara's videos too (in fact I posted a link to her "poor man's meal" Monday). She is so cute and I love watching her cook.

Listening to her really reminds me that the financial hardships were are currently going through are nothing compared to what she and her family went through. Did you catch on one video where she had to quit high school because she couldn't afford stockings? That would never happen today.

Oooh, I'm gonna have to check this out! I've been working on a series on my blog of meals for under $5. Hope to post at least one a week!

Gonna head over now.

I need to watch her. My grandmother had great stories. I have bootleggers in my family as well. Too funny.
